Learning League

Thursday night at Isle of Games is the Tucson community’s introductory and learning league. This is the place where seasoned players come to experience more casual theme nights, and to help teach new players of the game all about Lorcana!

New to trading card games? New to Lorcana? Have kids you’d like to bring along and teach? All are welcome!

Each week of the month will have a different theme, all designed to be fun and also help you learn the cards, and learn the elements of the game!

Week 1: Movie Deck Theme

Week 2: Shift Leader Deck Theme

Week 3: Wildcard or Casual (week 3 may rotate to be a different, but less regular theme)

Week 4: Tournament Play

Movie Deck Guidelines:

No ink restrictions (you can use any or all of the ink colors, if you like)
The cards in your deck must be from the same movie franchise. Example: If you are building an Aladdin deck, you can use Genie, Jafar, Iago, Jasmine, Flying Carpet, The Lamp, ect. You may not use Lorcana specific lore cards like Amethyst Chromicon.
You must have at least 60 cards in your deck.

🔄 What Is Shift Leader?

Shift Leader is a casual group game format for 3-4 player pods. Each player picks a special Floodborn character to act as their Shift Leader. This card starts outside your main deck and you always have access to it — similar to a commander in other games.

(Here is a list of all shiftable Floodborn character you could use.)

Deck Construction Rules

Deck Size: 59 cards + 1 Shift Leader (60 total).
Singleton Format: You can only have one copy of each card in your deck — with one exception:
Shift Targets Exception: You can include up to 3 copies of each card that your Shift Leader can shift onto.
Color Identity Limit: Your deck can use cards from up to 3 different inks (colors). The colors must match those found on your Shift Leader and your chosen shift targets.

✅ Example: If your Shift Leader is Rapunzel – Gifted Artist, you’re allowed up to:

3 copies of Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing
3 copies of Rapunzel – Sunshine

And you can use up to 3 ink colors total in your deck, based on those cards.

All other cards in your deck must follow the singleton rule (only one copy each).

⚙️ Gameplay Expectations

This is a casual, multiplayer-friendly format — so bring the vibes!
Games are meant to be fun and a bit chaotic, not hyper-competitive.
Your Shift Leader is available to you at all times, even if it’s not in your hand or deck.
How you “access” your Shift Leader — you might:
- Play it as if it’s in your hand once you have the ink
- Shift onto a legal target as soon as you can.
- Each time you play your shift leader from the shift leader zone you have to pay an extra 2 ink for each time you previously summon your Shift Leader (like commander tax). If you’re shifting into your leader instead of playing it, you only pay 1 extra ink for each time cast.

We’re still refining this part! Talk with your pod and agree on a fun, fair way to handle it.

The goal of Shift Leader is to explore new deckbuilding strategies, use underplayed cards, and create cool interactions around your chosen Floodborn character. It’s a great way to show off your favorite lore combos and have a blast with friends!
